Fixed, variable or special tariff: what's the difference?

Every electricity tariff for homes and businesses carries a colour that shows how its price is set. The colours are set by RAAEY, Greece's energy regulator, and are the same for every supplier.

Blue: fixed tariff

The price stays the same for the whole contract and the supplier can't change the terms on its own. It may have one price for peak hours and another for the rest of the day.

It may charge a fee if you leave before the contract ends (an early-exit fee). Before you sign, the supplier gives you a summary of the main charges and the fee.

Green: special tariff

The price changes every month and is announced at the start of it, before you use the electricity. RAAEY also publishes the green tariffs' prices so that you can compare them.

Yellow: variable tariff

The price follows the wholesale electricity market. With some yellow tariffs the month's price is known at its start; with others it is settled after the month ends.

There is no early-exit fee. The supplier may change the terms only for a serious reason, and only after telling you in writing, in good time.

Orange: dynamic tariff

The price changes during the day with the market's price for each hour. It suits those who can move their usage to cheaper hours, and it needs a meter that records usage hour by hour. There is no early-exit fee.

Which one suits you?

A fixed tariff gives you a price you know in advance. Variable and dynamic tariffs follow the market, up or down. The special tariff sits in between: you know each month’s price before you use the electricity.

Your advisor compares the current tariffs with your own usage and explains the differences. You can also compare them yourself with RAAEY's tool.
